Mixed Blessings is an adult SATB choir of roughly 20 singers who are all passionate about making music, having some fun, and raising money for charity. Mixed Blessings started life in 2003 when Tom Lee – assistant director of music at Holy Cross Choir in Bearsted – was asked to pull together an ad hoc choir to sing at a friend’s wedding. The group enjoyed the experience so much that they decided to make a regular thing of it, and Mixed Blessings was born.
Today Mixed Blessings’ predominantly a capella repertoire spans ancient and modern arrangements of madrigals, folk songs, spirituals and show songs, as well as new works such as Tom Cunningham’s Scotland at Night performed to a sell-out audience at Nettlestead Place in November 2010. We are part of group of three linked choirs comprising ‘Short Back ‘n’ Sides’ (men’s voices), ‘Barbishop’ (ladies voices) and ‘Mixed Blessings’ (mixed voices, hence the name). We are available for hire (three choirs for the price of one!), and have sung at many private and public events in Kent and London.
In 2005 one of our members set up ‘Song for Life’ as the charity brand under which we do all our fundraising. To date – in partnership with Mixed Blessings – Song for Life has made charitable donations totalling over £6,000 to causes including Ataxia UK, Demelza House, Cancer Research and Diabetes UK.
